About the Role

Our client is a VIC government organisation based in Dandenong. They are currently seeking a Financial Accountant to come in and join their team on a 6 month temp contract with potential for extension.

Candidates for this role must have:

  • Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance or similar, CA/CPA qualification (or in progress)
  • Demonstrated experience, achievement and innovation working in a Financial Accounting Department, including a sound understanding of accounting principles, and Accounting standards
  • A sound knowledge of Goods and Services Tax and Fringe Benefits Tax legislation, Australian Accounting Standards

Key responsibilities:

  • Statutory Financial Reporting: Assist in preparing the Annual Financial Statements and quarterly reports, ensuring strict adherence to Australian Accounting Standards and Local Government legislation.
  • Taxation Compliance & Advisory: Prepare monthly Business Activity Statements (BAS) and annual Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) returns while providing internal advice on GST and FBT issues.

  • Audit & Regulatory Coordination: Liaise with auditors to meet procedural requirements and ensure compliance with the Unclaimed Monies Act and various Local Government Regulations.

  • General Ledger & Database Maintenance: Maintain critical financial records, including the unearned revenue reconciliations, the Council’s leases database (LG Solutions), and general ledger reporting.

  • Financial Systems Administration: Support the development and maintenance of financial systems (Computron, CommBiz), perform system interfaces (Payroll/Purchasing), and document operating procedures.

  • Accounts Payable & Receivable Oversight: Perform integrity checks on EFT and vendor setups, ensure correct GST treatment on purchase orders, and provide backup support for debtor management.

  • Treasury & Team Support: Provide high-level backup for bank reconciliations and cash flow monitoring to ensure liquidity, while assisting the broader Financial Accounting team as required.
